Amsterdam Holland

Amsterdam Holland - the Netherlands

Amsterdam continues to be a highly popular destination for weekend breaks and it’s easy to see why. This city has a truly cosmopolitan feel with something for everyone. What’s more its compact size means it is best explored by foot, or even better do as the local do and get yourself a bike. There also a selection of boat trips to whisk you along one of the many picturesque canals, an ideal choice for a romantic dinner date.

Amsterdam is just a one-hour flight from London, making it really convenient. Alternatively, you can catch the Eurostar to Brussels and then simply hop on a train that will take you to Amsterdam Central Station. Once there you’ll discover a great choice if accommodation from the picturesque gabled townhouse hotels, to individual boathouses.

Much of the attraction of Amsterdam is its laidback lifestyle and café culture. It’s a city where it’s all too easy to happily while away an afternoon with a coffee, as you sit and watch the world go by. Popular areas to head for include Leidseplein and Rembrandtsplein, Amsterdam’s main squares where the busiest bars and nightlife are based.

Attractions

Amsterdam boasts a whole host of interesting museums totalling around 40! The Rijksmuseum is an absolute must and a good introduction as it houses an excellent all round mix of art styles and eras including some of Rembrandt’s finest work such as the famous Night Watch.

The Stedelijkmuseum is the other most talked about museum. The Stedelijkmuseum has mostly so called modern art including many famous artists such as: Picasso, Monet, Cezanne, Mondrain and Warhol. Whilst the Van Gogh Museum is also well worth visiting just to see the famous sunflower painting alone.

The famous House of Anne Frank could easily be missed were it not for the long queues that stretch outside it. The black-fronted 17th century house was home to Anne Frank, the young girl made famous by her diaries, which are brought to life when you see where she and her family hid out during the war years. This is a place that can’t fail to have a humbling effect on you.

At the heart of the city you’ll come across Dam Square, a large square dominated by the imposing presence of the Royal Palace. The palace was originally built as a city hall, and its ornate architecture and fine sculptures make it quite stunning.

For a completely different type of attraction take a trip to the Artis Zoo. Not only will you find hundreds of different types of animals but there is also a planetarium, a geological museum and some picturesque botanical gardens too.
